Drawing upon the rich heritage of Mexican craftsmanship, this JMDS designed restaurant is a symphony of textures and materials. Ánimo! offers a sensory journey that transports diners south, exploring the diverse array of regional morning traditions throughout the country. Opposite the entry, the point-of-sale volume reaches out into the space, tempting passers by with freshly baked goods.
As you step inside, you are enveloped in an atmosphere that is at once modern and timeless. From the rich tones of the custom sapele hardwood table tops, to the flowing curves of the Concrete Collaborative terrazzo counters, every element has been meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of warmth and authenticity.
As Maisie explains, “we wanted to capture the spirit of the project name – Ánimo. In Spanish, Ánimo signifies the act of reassuring, of encouraging someone to overcome a challenge; not to give up. This is a sentiment intended to liberate you from the day-to-day grind of a bustling city like Manhattan. To embody this energy, we wanted to break with the linear grid of midtown, and introduce flow, play, and texture into a space that pushes out into the City grid from the corner, inviting people in. Ánimo!”
Curving tile clad millwork serves as a focal point, seamlessly blending form and function to create an atmosphere of playful sophistication. Inspired by the dynamic curves and fluid lines found throughout Mexican architecture, each piece is a testament to the beauty of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Daylight pours through the south facing windows dancing across the brushed aluminum surfaces, casting a soft glow over the dining area’s intimate seating alcoves. Handmade Heath Ceramics tile wraps the curving banquet seating, while handmade Fireclay Tile wraps the POS volume. Texture and variation keep the hand of the artisan front and center, preparing you for the quality cuisine you are about to consume.
Combating the flatness of the typical NYC aluminum and glass storefront, as you approach the corner of 2nd Ave and 53rd St, you are greeted by a dynamic fluted facade clad with handmade Kinney Block. Chromed sconce lights dot the exterior; framing the glazed window bays that line the street.
