Portal House, a residential renovation and expansion – down to the studs – in Pasadena, California.

The existing residence was confined by a collective of internal walls that trapped light and air within each compartmentalized space. Circulation was circuitous and views were limited. JMDS re-envisioned the space through a portal center-piece.

A large, geometric volume levitates above the dining table, puncturing the roof to let dynamic daylight stream into the center of the floorplate.

A new open concept plan is created around the portal, interior elements are used to move the body through the space, and create privacy and opacity without compromising natural light. The multi-dimensional ceiling faces become tilted canvases for light to reflect.

Beautiful textured Zellige tile is featured throughout the project. The kitchen backsplash showcases a custom pattern by JMDS.

A spacious yet underutilized covered patio was captured and repurposed as an enlarged kitchen and living space with large sliding glass doors; which open up to a garden courtyard.

A reading nook is paired with a large fixed window is the perfect spot for the kids to curl up and read. integrated linear lighting features accentuate the design’s lines and allow for ambient lighting – no overheads.

Hand-made soft blue Zellige tile creates a cool calming light that permeates the kid’s bathroom.

In the primary bath, a rustic, earth-toned palette complements the bold strong edges of the interior form.
