The Quay scheme is a ground up, single family home proposal, designed for an incredibly unique piece of property straddling a ridge line in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, Southern California.
With a panoramic view of Downtown Los Angeles, the Hollywood Reservoir, and the iconic Hollywood sign, the Quay Scheme is designed to cultivate a dynamic living experience driven by a strong sectional quality that works into the Hillside creating terraces of programmatic worlds.
Materiality and light drive the design of this project -large planes of water guide onto a sunken passage leading you through the buildings core – where you emerge onto the lower sunken patio. Tactile and pock ridden Travertine stonework sits above the large glazed panels, creating captivating moments of volume and void. Smooth green marble contrasts and compliments the Travertine, forming a strong visual language that houses the private programs at its core. Taking inspiration from the Barcelona Pavilion, The Quay scheme, introduces similar elements of material sensibility while juxtaposing it against dynamic, offset forms.
Carved voids and shifting volumes shape the building language, paving opportunities for procession and dynamic elements for natural light infiltration deep into the floorplate. Multiple light wells full of lush sunken gardens, protrude through multiple levels, weaving daylight and greenery throughout the home. Terraced courtyards are designed to nurture moments of rest in everyday life. A lavish backyard entertains grand, covered seating, space for outdoor barbecues, a seamless pool that overlooks the hills, and sophisticated ramps that move you through the space to varying customized programs like spas, gardens, and an integrated guesthouse.
