TRUSS CABINS

Type: Modular Housing | Single Family
Size: 875 sqft
Location: Not Site Specific
Year: 2024
Status: Design Proposal

We were invited by our dear friends at Camber Studio in Red Hook NY, to contribute to a modular concept they’re developing. Our response to the brief (using a truss and bay logic), was to design and build a simple Kit of Parts that can be configured however the end-user likes.

The building size can expand through the simple addition of “bays” held up by an “off-the-shelf structural truss system, enabling a “free-plan” concept.

This concept has been developed in the face of cost prohibitive construction costs. It’s strengths are:

  • Affordable, Earth-Friendly Dwellings
  • Based on Industrial Building
  • Typology Modular/Prefab Components
  • Highly Customizable

The Rigid Shell is comprised of Structural Insulated Panels (SIP), with interior finish pre-applied. SIPs are used on the primary faces and roof where they can be prefinished and connected directly to the structural trusses and envelope and optional modifications to the envelop are minimal.

For diversity, the envelope end-caps are Prefabricated Timber Frame Panels with Batt Insulation. Timber framing (traditional or prefabricated panels) are used as a cost-effective way to build infill walls and allow for greater customization.
